Gephyrochromis was first described in 1901 by Boulenger. It was the first genus erected specifically for mbuna. It is relatively unknown in the aquarium hobby since imports of this fish are rare.
Its special characteristics are the commonly conical form of the teeth in the outer row in both jaws, as well as the fact that the individual teeth are longer and more slender than in the closely related genus Pseudotropheus.
