Cynotilapia was described by Regan in 1922. Males are extremely territorial. Keeping them is best in a community of other mbuna in a well populated aquarium. This will minimize the effect on individual subordinate fish.
Cynotilapia have well-separated, unicuspid teeth. That are strongly conical in the outer row. The inner rows are smaller and irregularly spaced.
