Canister filters have come along way since the time when I stared in this hobby. Canister filters were large bulky high volume mechanical filters that were hard to conceal and harder to keep quiet.
Enter the canister filters we have today. They are still large volume filters mainly for larger tanks. They are quiet magnetic impeller driven, with endless possibilities of filter combinations. Some are even complete tank maintenance systems.
The only drawback to these filters is how to conceal them. Since they sit below the tank anything but a cabinet stand cannot hide them. A little prior planning helps a long way when deciding where to route the hoses that are necessary to use these filters..
Also these filters are little pricey. However you get what you pay for in this case.
