Most beginners usually only look at one dimension of a tank. That's water volume or the number of gallons it holds. Then they will base everything else on this dimension, (filtration, fish, etc.). I see many general "rules" out here in cyber space, "So many inches of fish per gallon", "this air pump for this gallon tank" this sort of thing. I would caution the beginner, that when people start giving such broad answers, to get a second opinion. I'm not saying that these "rules" hold true or not. However, I do know that these "rules" do not apply to all situations, and talking in generalization and absolution is a dangerous thing. What I want readers to have from this site is the understanding that the shape of a tank requires different solutions to have them function successfully.

I don't want to discourage anyone from buying any tank they please. I just want the beginning hobbyist to understand that the first 3 tanks in the pictures above may take special requirements than the last standard tank.
